Pewter Desk
28th June 2011, Porthluney Cove, Caerhays, Cornwall.
My largest pewter casting to date! I returned to my favourite beach at Caerhays on the south coast of Cornwall to produce a solid pewter desk using the same primitive form of sand-casting I experimented with whilst studying at the RCA. The date of the casting was scheduled for the 28th June as high tide coincided with sunrise and I knew I needed at least 6 hours to carve the mould and cast the pewter before the water table began to rise again. At 4:30am I began carving the negative of the desk into the sand using no more than a kitchen knife and a metal rod and by 10:30 the mould was ready for casting. We melted 180kg of pewter (92% tin, 2% copper, 6% antimony) in 30 stainless steel saucepans on 30 gas camping stoves. Myself and five assistants (including my dad), wearing leather welding gauntlets and safety goggles, began pouring the molten pewter into the sand mould one saucepan at a time in quick succession until the liquid pewter reached the brim of the mould. The pewter took over an hour to cool and solidify before I could begin to dig away the sand and excavate the the pewter desk, and between five of us we easily managed to lift the finished desk out from the sand. The natural texture of the sand appears on the legs and underside whilst the smooth seemingly molten surface of the pewter remains on the top surface of the desk.

Der Bandstuhl ist Teil von Markus Bangerters Bachelorarbeit mit dem Titel Polyfine. Das Sitzmöbel wurde aus thermoplastischer Chemiefaser geformt, welche durch Zuführung von Hitze erstarrt und eine leicht elastische, aber stabile Struktur erhält. Die daraus resultierenden Möbel haben ein extrem geringes Gewicht und sind selbstverständlich alltagstauglich.

Weight Vases

What is a vase? How does it work?

Those were simple questions I asked myself for this historical object which
was created since Neolithic period.

I found that, all the vases in the world have a same basic principle to hold

There are 2 important parts which function differently. Top part (vase-mount),
has a duty to hold flower stem and base part, to hold water and also offer
a stability to the vase.

“Weight” brings a new perspective on a vase design by the separation of 2
different parts which support each other.

Water container made of concrete pile-up on a steel piece to give a stability
for holding flowers.

In the collection, there are 4 vases for different flower setting from single
flower to flowers panel.

Decha developed the project while studying at the ECAL ( University of Art
and Design Lausanne ) in 2011

From sweets wrapped in banana leaf impression of Thailand, that
material is close to the natural. Banana leaf like wrapped package dessert
in various form is the good demonstrate creativity of the Thai people since
the past. This concept has led to deployment of the banana leaf shows the
linear structure of the mantle to a personal feeling. In addition, more friendly
shape can be used. To experience the precision of work, it shows similar
with the same elaborate and in genious confection of Thailand in the past
to the present.

California Roll House, 2011

At times, the simplest form with least manipulation from its original form can offer visual amenities and adapted solution to the context. California Roll prefabricated house takes this methodology to create its morphological adaptation to its environemt : desert. Homogeneous exterior material which provides high grade of energy efficiency and reflects heat from the sun covers the entire surface except for glass panels which is electronically controlled to change its transparency.
Modularization of every structure members and finish materials are maximized to provide mobilty with rapid assembly and disassembly on site.

To sustain its challenging structural stand, carbon fibre truss frame under neath the exterior material holds the entire architecture. Hydraulic powered automatic doors and security system is used for main entrance door which allows less spaces to operate the door mechanism. California Roll house features these latest technologies applied to architecture which breaks the boundary of product or vehicle design and architectural design which brings more mobility to living spaces.

Plain surface on the ground extended from exterior surface provides paved area for out door activities which requires flat and artificial surface different from desert sand surface. As well as surface on the ground, inside of exterior shell is covered with fibre reinforced plastic panels.

Modularized skylights and windows along the exterior surface can be placed at desired location to light its interior space to meet resident’s requirement from his own usage of the space.
Passive and subtle control of privacy of bedroom area is provided by curtain divider and bookshelf with translucent midpart. These parts allows the residents to have sense of privacy by delicate visual hints over as well as providing lights through.
Overall, the privacy in California Roll is controlled rather passively with resident’s awareness than tight blocking of spaces in-between.

Automatic main door mechanism diagram

Since the main entrance is on the sloped wall, the door mechanism should be designed in unconventional way. Adopting ideas from automotive design industry, hydraulic powered automatic door controlled by number lock panel is installed on the sloped wall as main entrance to minimize the space required for operation to avoid contact with user while in operation. When the door is fully open, the clearence height is up to 2 meters.
The door opens into two pieces, the upper piece lifts up over head, and the lower piece unfolds onto the floor for visitors to step on. When the door is completely closed, the material on the outside of door continues with the material of the exterior surface to achieve conformity and hide the entrance.
